The young girl in the camp
I wake up in the middle of the night. It is cold, rainy and my feet are sore. Yesterday we have walked 26 miles to the refugee camp. I can see the rain coming through the holes in the cover of the tent. My parents are sleeping right next to me, together with my 2-month-old sister. We have no beds, so we have to lay on the cold hard ground. I am hungry because I have not eaten anything since yesterday morning. Suddenly I hear people screaming outside and I decide to take a look. I can’t see anything because it’s pitch dark and there are no lights. I walk back to my ‘bed’ I just lay there, thinking about what is happening outside. Thinking about the conditions my family is in. Thinking about the money we don’t have. After some time I fall back asleep.
I suddenly wake up again because I hear people screaming again. The sun already rose to the sky so I can see. I look around and I see a group of people standing in a circle. I decide to take a look and I see a kid lying on the ground. The ground is red, it is blood. The girl doesn’t move and the people around her cry. With the image in my head, I head back to the tent where my parents are. “It isn’t safe here, it isn’t safe” I tell my parents.
This is the story of a young girl in one of Kashmir’s refugee camps. India, Pakistan and China are fighting over control and the inhabitants are forgotten. The conditions are horrible and nobody dares to help them because of the dangers.
This, is the Kashmir conflict.
