Early history
The Kashmir region became independent after the indepence declarations from the British East Indian company. India, Pakistan and China were all released from the autocratical powers of the British fleet. But just after the independence problems started to arise over the region with both India, Pakistan and China claiming the region to their territory. In 1947 the first war between India and Pakistan breaks out over the region.
Timeline
1947 – First Indo-Pakistani war breaks out
1948 – the United Nations get involved after India drew attention to the war. The UN provides a solution to both countries but Pakistan resists to cooperate and refuses to withdraw its troops from the region. Kashmir is gets divided into two regions by the UN, Jammu (Indian) and Kashmir (Pakistani).
1950s – China is gradually gaining control over the eastern part of the region calling it ‘Aksai Chin’ and claiming It belongs to China. Now three different countries are involved in the conflict.
1951 – first elections are held in Jammu to give the region its own ruler, Sheikh Abdullah wins the elections.
1953 – in August 1953, Sheikh Abdullah gets arrested by the pro-Indian authorities due to not cooperating with the Indian government and resisting to cooperate in gaining control over the Pakistani Kashmir region.
1957 – An Indian constitution shows that Kashmir and Jammu belongs to India, however the Pakistani Kashmir activists resist to listen and keep on fighting of the region.
1961/1962 – China wins the battle with India and has now full control over the Aksai Chin.
1965 – second Indo-Pakistani war breaks out, resulting in a ceasefire with both countries returning to their previous positions. Many people died or got seriously injured.
1971 – Third Indo-Pakistani war out. East Pakistan wants to be independent and a civil war breaks out. (This part is now known as Bangladesh.)
1972 – Pakistan and India both sign the ‘Simla agreement’ saying they will respect the border between the three countries. This works to a certain extend but fighting continues.
1990 – Protest arise and more than 1,000,000 people get into the streets, fighting for a free Kashmir. More than 40 people are killed by the Indian police. The Indian government claims that Pakistani infiltrates started the protests. At this point more than 34,000 people are killed.
From 1990 until 2014 more fights occur without any resolutions. More than 1000 people die.
2014 – After some serious troubles India and Pakistan get into another flare up, 18 people die and at least 12 people are still missing.
